Calf Cramps
Calf cramps in sports are sudden, painful muscle contractions often triggered by a few reasons.
- Muscle fatigue: Targeted stretching and strengthening and gradual conditioning.
- Dehydration: Frequent hydration.
- Electrolyte imbalances: Have a sports drink or lime juice with sodium and potassium.
- Pre-existing problems: Problems like diabetes, thyroid conditions and others.
- Smoking: Blood vessels may constrict causing pain.
- Alcohol: Causes dehydration and poorly coordinated exercises.
How to Achieve Immediate Relief
Stretch and Hold: Straighten your leg and pull the top of your foot toward your face, or lean against a wall with your heel flat on the floor.
Massage: Gently rub the tight muscle tissue to help the fibers relax.
How to Build Strength
Add calf raises and regular leg stretches to your weekly routine.
Pace Yourself: Increase your sports intensity and training time slowly rather than all at once.
